Johnny Depp shocked audiences with a surprise cameo at the end of JK Rowling’s Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them, but his casting proved a controversial one after he was accused of domestic abuse ahead of the movie’s premiere. Depp is set to reprise his role as Gellert Grindelwald in the upcoming film, Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald, and recently opened up about what fans can expect in the highly anticipated sequel.

In his interview with Entertainment Weekly, Depp talked in great length about meeting with Rowling and developing Grindelwald as a character. The actor revealed that Rowling gave him a lot of creative freedom when it came to bringing Grindelwald to life, including allowing him to design some of the character’s look.

Although there are many fans who protested Depp’s involvement, he had nothing but good things to say about Harry Potter fans and the world Rowling has created.

“The Potter fans are like scholars of this stuff which I find incredibly impressive,” Depp shared. “I hope to give them something they haven’t seen before.”

Depp added that he is extremely loyal to Rowling and director David Yates and did his best to remain true to their vision. He also added his own interpretation to the character, which he hopes fans will greatly appreciate.

In addition to Depp’s revealing interview, producers recently released new promo features ahead of the movie’s premiere.
