Katy Perry revealed what would have been her Madonna-inspired 2020 Met Gala look
Sadly, for New York City’s Metropolitan Museum of Art, the show could not go on. The Met was forced to postpone “fashion’s biggest night out,” planned for May 4th, due to the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic. This year, the Met Gala theme was based on the Costume Institute’s fashion exhibition called “About Time: Fashion and Duration.” Katy Perry showed off what she would have worn, and we’re getting full Madonna vibes.
“What would have been…” Perry captioned her May 4th Instagram post, using the hashtag #TheMetBall2020. Her outfit was designed by Jean Paul Gaultier. It would have paid homage to his iconic cone bra, which Madonna wore in 1990. This time, however, there was a twist for Perry’s pregnancy.
Perry is currently expecting her first child with Orlando Bloom, and her Met Gala look was designed to showcase her pregnancy.
Perry’s modern rendition of the cone bra is a direct nod to ’90s Madonna. Madonna, with Gaultier, reinvented the bullet bra of the 1940s and 1950s, which in turn, was made famous by Frederick’s of Hollywood. Fashion doesn’t get much more cyclical than this. Fittingly, that’s precisely what the Met Gala 2020 theme was all about.
The aim of the “About Time” exhibit is to “trace more than a century and a half of fashion—from 1870 to the present—along a disruptive timeline.” Its goal is to prove how fashion is both “linear and cyclical,” per the Met. The exhibition is now set to debut at the Met in October 2020.
The 2020 Gala, which was to be co-chaired by Nicolas Ghesquière of Louis Vuitton, Lin-Manuel Miranda, Emma Stone, Meryl Streep, and Vogue’s Anna Wintour, will reportedly also take place when the exhibit opens on October 29th. However, depending on the state of the pandemic come October, this date may change yet again.
Although we may not get to see our favorite stars like Perry flaunt their creativity on the Met red carpet this year, we’re glad some have chosen to show off “what could have been.”
