‘Red Dead Redemption 2’ Is Now Tied For Rockstar’s Best-Reviewed Game Ever, Sort Of

Red Dead Redemption 2 had a lot to live up to when it comes to reviews. Rockstar's previous game, GTA 5, has a 97 on Metacritic. The original Red Dead Redemption has a 95, and GTA 4 has a 98. The review embargo lifted today, and it doesn't look like this absurd winning streak is ending any time soon. Red Dead Redemption 2  on PS4 currently stands at a 97 on Metacritic, and with 72 critics currently reporting in it doesn't look like that's going anywhere fast. The Xbox One version is actually one point higher, at 98. This means that Red Dead Redemption 2 on PS4 ties with GTA 5 and GTA 3 for Rockstar's second-best reviewed game yet, losing out only to GTA 4. Red Dead Redemption 2 on Xbox One, however, is tied for Rockstar's best game ever. Note: it's the same game. Critics praise the gam...

Seattle introduces ‘swatting’ protection measures—but does it go far enough?

The Seattle Police Department just launched new safety measures to protect streamers and online personalities from “swatting,” or when a perpetrator phones a fake 911 call in order to send heavily armed police officers to an innocent person’s house. But some internet users think Seattle law enforcement’s solutions place too much onus on the victim and not enough on punishing the aggressor—or policing the police. In a new page titled “Protect Yourself from Swatting,” the Seattle police revealed that it is working with services Smart 911 and Rave Mobile Safety so residents can create web profiles warning police officers and 911 dispatchers if they are at-risk for swatting. Under Rave Mobile, streamers, online personalities, and other potential victims can tell 911 call takers if swatting ...

Destiny 2: Forsaken feels like the best Halo game in years

Barreling through an alien prison in Destiny 2: Forsaken, I feel a familiar sensation. As my Guardian blasts through an oncoming throng of screeching creatures, old reactions begin to resurface. This had nothing to do with the dozens of hours I’ve poured into Destiny 2 and its expansions; it reminded me of some of the very best console FPS games I’ve ever played. Halo’s legacy has always cast a long shadow over Destiny. Promising the biggest sci-fi series of the generation, Bungie delivered Destiny as a blend of MMO and RPG systems layered on top of some truly impressive combat. Since 2014, the game has evolved, changed, and walked back some ambitious goals. But Forsaken, the sequel’s most significant add-on, is a thorough batch of Bungie’s most original ideas in some time. It’s no s...

Netflix’s ‘The Witcher’ showrunner leaves Twitter after racist backlash

For a show that doesn’t actually exist yet, Netflix‘s The Witcher is provoking a lot of strong opinions. Some because it’s based on a massively popular video game and book series, some because Henry Cavill just got cast in the lead role, and others because, well… they’re racist. This issue reared its head over the weekend, thanks to a casting call requesting non-white actresses to audition for the role of Ciri. The Witcher showrunner Lauren S. Hissrich—who until now had been actively discussing the show on Twitter—announced she was taking a break from social media on Monday. “The hate is enlightening,” Hissrich wrote. It's time for a Twitter hiatus. The love here is amazing, and the hate is enlightening, like a real-life Trial of the Grasses, except I HAVE to read less and write m...

LGBT Pride flags in the new ‘Spider-Man’ game have folks smiling

There’s a lot to be happy about with Marvel’s Spider-Man, the new web-slinging superhero video game from Sony and Insomniac, The Daily Dot’s AJ Moser called it “the most authentic Spider-Man game ever made,” and fans of the wall-crawler have another reason to be cheerful, as several LGBTQ Pride flags are seen waving proudly in the New York City air. Since the game was released on Friday morning, fans have only had a little bit of time to digest it, but plenty have already noticed the Pride flag jutting from a few buildings, as well as appearing in a massive mural on the side of another. Eisner Award-winning writer Saladin Ahmed was one of the first to kick off the trend of calling out the flag throughout the game’s several districts.   Wow. I stopped to perch on a building in...
