Armed Passerby Happens to See State Trooper in Danger and Saves His Life

With the gun debate flaring up after each mass shooting in America, it’s almost inconceivable that a felon would be able to get his sentence lowered to a misdemeanor, allowing him to carry again.

But when one man begged to have his right to carry reinstated because he’s an avid hunter, it would result in him saving a state trooper’s life in Arizona.

Drug Addict

A 37-year-old man, who was believed to be in the United States illegally was also known to many as a methamphetamine (crystal meth) user. Despite Leonard Penuelas-Escobar previously being turned away from entering the U.S. in 2005, he got in anyway and lived in Glendale, Arizona, for at least a year and a half.

Illegally Living in the U.S.

Thomas Yoxall Storywww.azfamily.com

According to AZ Central news, Penuelas-Escobar had no criminal history and was a former federal police officer in Mexico. On a Thursday night in 2017, Penuelas-Escobar was driving a vehicle at a high speed when it rolled over. Since he was wearing a seat belt, he did not incur any serious injuries in the crash, but the woman he was with did.

The Passenger

Thomas Yoxall Storywww.azcentral.com

The woman, identified as Vanessa Monique Lopez-Ruiz, 23, was not wearing her seat belt and was thrown from the vehicle. According to Frank Milstead, Arizona Department of Public Safety director, the woman was from Phoenix and a known methamphetamine user. Lopez-Ruiz had a criminal history involving possession of drugs and shoplifting and there were multiple warrants out for her arrest at the time of the accident.

A Horrible Night

Thomas Yoxall Storywww.driving-tests.org

She and Penuelas-Escobar were believed to be a couple and had recently been kicked out of their apartment because they were abusing and possibly selling drugs. For this reason, they were staying in Salome, and it’s believed they were heading there when they crashed. Salome is 45 miles northwest of the where the accident took place.

Impaired Judgement

Thomas Yoxall Storywww.apnews.com

Milstead told AZ Central that the motive of the crash is unknown. “I’m gonna guess that he was impaired. They were both known meth users. You can surmise that maybe there were hallucinations … you can surmise that he was frustrated that his girlfriend was mortally injured in this collision and people wouldn’t stop [to help],” he said.

Fatal Crash

Thomas Yoxall StoryShutterstock

The car rolled after being hit, which ejected Lopez-Ruiz from the vehicle and killed her. He then shot a passing car and that driver called the police. Other drivers saw what happened and called police after seeing Penuelas-Escobar dragging the woman’s body out of the road while holding a gun.

Meanwhile, state trooper Edward Andersson was responding to a call about a female victim thrown from a car. When he showed up at the scene, he “saw a male subject kneeling and holding a female in his arms,” Andersson told CNN. So he blocked the slow lane with his car, set out flares and called for a medical helicopter. But when he returned to the victim, the man was missing.

Letting His Anger Out

Thomas Yoxall Storywww.lightingever.com

“I scan with my flashlight and I found him standing in the emergency lane. I could tell he already had his weapon pointed at me.” Penuelas-Escobar wasn’t a victim at all, but was the shooter who motorists reported to police. “I would try to get my Taser out,” Andersson said. “But every time I would do that, he would strike me in the head, and pound my head on the pavement.”

Shooting an Officer

Thomas Yoxall Storyen.mogaznews.com

Penuelas-Escobar said something in Spanish to Andersson and then shot him once in the upper right shoulder. The bullet in his shoulder paralyzed his arm and prevented him from reaching for his own weapon. It was 4:30 in the morning and the road was dark and desolate.

Beating Him

Thomas Yoxall Storywww.pixabay.com

There was no one else around other than Penuelas-Escobar and the injured female companion. And the attack wasn’t over. Penuelas-Escobar charged at him, striking him again with the weapon and bashing his head into the pavement. “I kicked him into the fast lane hoping that a car would come by and hit him,” Andersson said. “But it didn’t work.”

Who Pulled the Trigger?

Thomas Yoxall StoryShutterstock

Andersson rolled onto his right side and shielded his weapon from the attacker. “I knew if he got my gun it’d be all over right then,” he said. But then, Andersson heard a voice and gunshots. The attacker laid dead in front of him and Andersson was alive. But he wondered who shot Penuelas-Escobar and in turn saved his own life.

Former Felon

Thomas Yoxall Storywww.phoenixnewtimes.com

He would learn that a former felon, Thomas Yoxall, happened to be driving by the scene, seeing the man on top of Andersson. Yoxall was a lifelong hunter who begged a judge to reinstate his rights, allowing him to carry a gun again. That morning, on January 12, 2017, Yoxall thought he’d be taking pictures, as he was a photographer heading for a conference in Anaheim, California.

Never Expected That

Thomas Yoxall Storywww.gunfreedomradio.com

He had just begun the five-hour-long drive along Interstate 10 when a patrol car sped passed him. “I was thinking, not a good way to start the morning with someone getting pulled over,” Yoxall said. He saw the flashing lights once as he sipped his coffee and then again as he approached mile marker 84.

Intervening

Thomas Yoxall Storysure_shot_photo / Twitter

As Yoxall drove by the scene, he saw the man beating Andersson “fist after fist.” Yoxall pulled over, took his firearm from the center console of his truck and exited his vehicle. “I yell out to the suspect to stop, I said ‘get off him!’” Yoxall said. “His facial expression, the look in his eye was ‘evil’ if I had to put a word on it.”

Taking Action

Thomas Yoxall StoryShutterstock

Penuelas-Escobar refused to stop and continued beating Andersson. “I hear a voice … ask me if I needed help,” Andersson recalled. “I said ‘yes, I do.’” Penuelas-Escobar quickly told Andersson to “shut up!” while Yoxall moved to his left to ensure that Andersson wasn’t in his line of fire.

Shooting Penuelas-Escobar

Thomas Yoxall Storywww.syracuse.com

Penuelas-Escobar resumed his assault as Andersson bled from his head and Yoxall knew he had to take action. The first shot struck Penuelas-Escobar in the chest, and the second, in his head. The attack was over and Penuelas-Escobar was dead, while Andersson headed to the hospital to receive surgery and more than 100 staples and stitches.

Saving an Officer’s Life

Thomas Yoxall Storywww.azfamily.com

Doctors were able to stabilize him and from his hospital bed, Andersson realized he’d probably be dead if it wasn’t for Yoxall. “As much as I fought, at one point I probably couldn’t have gone on anymore,” Andersson said. “I wouldn’t be here if not for him.” If the attack happened two decades ago, things may have ended differently.

Could Have Been Different

Thomas Yoxall Storywww.apnews.com

At that time, Yoxall was a different man. He was charged with theft in 2000 but the case was pleaded down to a misdemeanor in 2003, allowing him to reinstate his gun rights. “God chose to put me in that place at that moment,” Yoxall said of the encounter with Andersson. “I just can’t see an evil like that perpetuated without intervening.”

A Lifelong Bond

Thomas Yoxall Storywww.cnn.com

Even with Andersson’s arm in a sling, he still found a way to embrace Yoxall every time they met. In the weeks following the shooting, the pair met a few times, forging what they believe is a lifelong bond. “And not just between me and him,” Andersson added, “but between my family and him, too.”

No Regrets

Thomas Yoxall Storywww.apnews.com

Andersson knows that lives were lost that day but he hopes people won’t judge Yoxall for pulling the trigger. “I hope people understand that he had to do what he had to do to save somebody else’s life,” Andersson said. Yoxall admits that he has no regrets but that it’s “hard to relive sometimes.”

Decades After A Stolen Child Was Reunited With His Family, Questions Arose About His True Identity

As hard as the police and FBI try to solve every case, it’s impossible not to make mistakes from time to time. They’re only human, and sometimes there are so many moving parts it’s difficult to find the answer.

When a one-day-old baby was stolen out of a hospital in Chicago, police and the FBI went on a manhunt to locate him. Then, two years later, they miraculously found him and returned him to his parents. However, not all was as it seemed…

In Chicago, 1964, Paul Fronczak was only one day old when he was stolen from the Michael Reese Hospital by a woman posing as a nurse. Paul’s mother, Dora, handed her newborn son off to the woman, and she left the room, never to return.

Immediately, a citywide manhunt was launched. About 175,000 postal workers, 200 police officers, and the entire FBI scoured every inch of Chicago, but Paul was nowhere to be found. Would Dora and her husband, Chester, ever see Paul again?

To compensate for these feelings Paul became super outgoing, listened to loud music, and started cruising on motorcycles. He was just trying to find himself, but this made him feel like even more of an outcast.

Man Takes His Metal Detector To The Woods And What He Finds Leaves Him With More Questions

Most people don’t consider men and women combing fields with metal detectors to be even remotely in the same league as, say, Indiana Jones. Although these enthusiasts may not crack a whip quite like Harrison Ford, the treasures they unearth would put even the great Dr. Jones to shame.

When one Vermont man went trekking through the forest with his metal detector, he was hoping to find anything that would make his expedition worthwhile. What he found instead may be the greatest discovery in treasure hunting history…

A lifelong metal detector enthusiast, Brad Martin of Green Mountain Metal Detecting has pulled all kinds of forgotten treasures from the earth. But nothing could prepare Brad for what would become the greatest find of his life.

Though some treasure hunters prefer the prospects of a sandy beach, Brad’s frequent sweeps of his native Vermont have always proved to be more fruitful. Thanks to his rapport with the people of the area, Brad was given free rein over thousands of acres of privately owned land.

On one fateful day, Brad decided to hike into the mountains to an area known to contain the ruins of an old building. When he arrived, he came upon a large hole in the ground — likely the remains of the building’s basement — and miles of dilapidated stone walls.

Brad was convinced that his next great find was lying somewhere in this patch of woods. He could almost feel it. Little did he know how right he really was.

No sooner did Brad begin searching that he stumbled upon his first find of the day: a tombac button. This type button was very popular in the 1700s, but fell out of favor due to its brittleness.

This button’s discovery meant that whoever had searched the area before had missed it, and likely many more hidden treasures. Sure enough, Brad’s intuition was spot on, and the finds just kept coming…

Brad’s next big pull of the day was this valuable copper coin. Though the surface had been worn over time, Brad concluded that it was either a British halfpenny or a coin from an early colony.

When Brad pulled this peculiar-looking object out of the ground, he couldn’t make heads or tails of it. While he initially believed it to be an old clock hand, Brad later said that it was likely the trigger-guard plate from an old musket.

Finally, Brad unearthed a coin from the ground that he was actually able to identify! The face of the relatively large coin depicted a bust of King George II, and alongside the image was the word “CONNEC”. For Brad, this could only mean one thing…

This was a Connecticut copper, struck 1785-1788, likely worth a few hundred dollars. Though this find in and of itself was enough to make Brad’s expedition a success, there was one unbelievable treasure still yet to be found.

As the sun began to set on his day of detecting, Brad decided to slowly make his way back to his truck. Detecting as he walked, Brad’s device suddenly picked up a reading just a few yards from the road.

The metal detector rang out a solid 79, which was right around the same reading that his other finds of the day had been. Taking out his camera and shovel one last time, Brad began digging.

The higher the reading on the detector, the more valuable the item below is likely to be. Though Brad believed this find would turn out to be another button he was shocked at what he found this time…

Brushing off the soil, Brad unearthed a massive silver coin in amazing condition. He was stunned: a find like this easily should’ve read as a 99 on his metal detector!

After carefully cleaning the coin, Brad realized he had unearthed an incredible 1780 Spanish Eight Reales. This was the same fabled coin known as a “Piece of 8” from the pirate legends of old.

Spanish silver coins came in five varieties during the time they were minted: 1/2, 1, 2, 4, and 8 Reales, with 8 being the most valuable and sought-after. Though considered legal tender in the US up until the 1800s, finding a coin like this — and in such good shape — was one in a million.

As Brad’s excitement over his amazing find wore off, however, he began to grow suspicious of some of the coin’s features. Not only did the coin’s 79 reading still linger in his head, but someone had also carved the initials “DS” into its face.

After doing some research, Brad learned that this coin was one of the most counterfeited in the world during its circulation. In fact, Britain heavily counterfeited this coin in order to cripple the Spanish economy during the Anglo-Spanish War, 1796-1808.

Though Brad’s life-changing find is likely a fake, the counterfeit coin will fetch a respectable price on the open market. Of course, Brad’s not in it for the money, and the thought of his next big find will surely have him back out there with his metal detector in no time!

Check out the video of Brad’s once-in-a-lifetime find to experience his excitement firsthand! It just might inspire you to start your own metal detecting adventure.

What an amazing discovery! You never know what kind of treasures may be hiding just below the surface!

The Police Knocked On His Door And What They Told Him Changed His Life Forever

The Police Knocked On His Door And What They Told Him Changed His Life Forever

It might sound strange, but sometimes illegal acts are committed in order to protect someone in trouble. Breaking the law in almost any scenario is never advisable, but when it’s for someone’s well-being, it can be an understandable choice.

One man had made a good life for himself in a small rural town in Minnesota. However, when a police officer knocked on his door his entire world changed. Suddenly, the bizarre series of events that led up to the officer’s arrival started to unfold…

Michael Richard Landers lived with his grandparents in the small rural town of Long Prairie, Minnesota. However, when he was 24 years old, he was given news that changed his life.

The Police Knocked On His Door And What They Told Him Changed His Life Forever

Michael worked at an auto parts shop in a quiet town with a population of just 3,500 residents. Even though he lived at his grandparents’ house, he helped out with expenses as much as he could. But, his grandparents weren’t the only people relying on him to make a good living…

He also had a wife named Bobbie, too. He and Bobbie were together for quite some time, and now they were about to start another exciting chapter together.

Bobbie was pregnant with their first child! Michael already had two children from a previous relationship, but he was thrilled to start a family with Bobbie. However, this wasn’t the only new beginning they would face.

The Police Knocked On His Door And What They Told Him Changed His Life Forever

One afternoon, after Michael had returned home from work, he was helping his grandparents with some chores around the house, when suddenly, someone knocked on the door…

The Police Knocked On His Door And What They Told Him Changed His Life Forever

Standing on the front porch was a police officer named John Russell. Naturally, Michael was startled by the sudden presence of the cop. Officer Russell then proceeded to tell Michael some extremely unsettling news.

The Police Knocked On His Door And What They Told Him Changed His Life Forever

He told Michael the grandparents he had been living with for the last 19 years had actually kidnapped him from his actual parents in Indiana. Michael was dumbfounded.

The Police Knocked On His Door And What They Told Him Changed His Life Forever

According to Michael’s biological mother, who spoke to the officer, the grandparents took her five-year-old son out to a diner one morning for breakfast, and they never returned. But, why would they do such a thing?

The Police Knocked On His Door And What They Told Him Changed His Life Forever

Well, for starters, Michael’s parents were living out of a car at the time, and his grandparents were given temporary custody of their grandson while his mother and father tried to sort things out. But, that wasn’t the only reason for the grandparents’ actions.

The Police Knocked On His Door And What They Told Him Changed His Life Forever

Michael’s mother, Lisa, suffered from mild developmental disabilities. She eventually moved into a group home that didn’t accommodate children, and after she was released, she tried to regain custody. That’s when Michael vanished for nearly two decades. But, how did police eventually locate him after so much time?

The Police Knocked On His Door And What They Told Him Changed His Life Forever

While attending church some 19 years after her son disappeared, Lisa was discussing the details of the case with an Indiana State Police detective. The conversation prompted the detective to revisit the mystery.

After some research, the detective discovered there was someone living in Long Prairie with the same social security number and birthday as Michael. This immediately raised red flags…

They eventually tracked down Michael at his grandparents home in Little Prairie, Minnesota. When Michael’s parents were informed of the discovery, they were overwhelmed with emotion. Their son was found at last!

The Police Knocked On His Door And What They Told Him Changed His Life Forever

Michael’s father, naturally, was incredibly relieved by the news. Of course, he was hoping to completely rekindle a relationship with his son after so much time apart. But, how did Michael feel about everything? Was he angry his grandparents stole him away at such a young age?

The Police Knocked On His Door And What They Told Him Changed His Life Forever

After learning about his parents’ struggles, Michael knew his grandparents did the right thing, even though it was illegal. They broke the law to benefit their grandson’s well-being, and Michael was happy they did. So, what’s happened to Michael since the startling realization?

The Police Knocked On His Door And What They Told Him Changed His Life Forever

Well, he and Bobbie had their child together! Michael could not have been happier and more proud to welcome their son, Sam, into the world.

The Police Knocked On His Door And What They Told Him Changed His Life Forever

Look at how adorable Sam is! He has a contagious smile just like his father, and Michael and Bobbie plan on raising him in a loving and stable household. He doesn’t ever want Sam to go through what he did…

The Police Knocked On His Door And What They Told Him Changed His Life Forever

Now, Michael and Bobbie have a beautiful family, and they haven’t let the past hold them back. Michael loves being a dad, and he credits his skills in that area to the lessons he learned about parenting from his grandparents.

The Police Knocked On His Door And What They Told Him Changed His Life Forever

Michael never had any sour feelings towards his grandparents for what they did when he was five. As far as he was concerned, they always had his safety in mind, and they made a bold move to keep it that way.

The Police Knocked On His Door And What They Told Him Changed His Life Forever

What a wild turn of events! Sometimes people do things that may be illegal, but in the end, it’s because they feel they are protecting a loved one. What do you think? Were Michael’s grandparents’ actions justified?

Some people are sure to disagree with the grandparents’ actions, but at the end of the day, it was all for the safety of their grandson.

When This Famous Paraglider Was Sucked Into A Huge Storm, She Needed A Miracle

Picture yourself floating thousands of feet above the ground. For most people, that image is enough to induce a full-on panic attack. For certain adrenaline junkies, however, there’s nothing better. While it may sound dangerous, modern equipment makes it pretty safe — most of the time…

When one German paraglider set out for a normal practice run, she didn’t anticipate any problems. But once nearly everything went wrong, she knew she would have to draw upon every ounce of her athletic expertise to survive.

Are you afraid of heights? Ewa Wisnierska sure isn’t. In fact, she is one of the top paragliders in the world. But even with years of experience, she had no idea about the dangers she would face in 2007.

When This Famous Paraglider Was Sucked Into A Huge Storm, She Needed A Miracle

As a member of the German national team, Ewa was in the Manilla, Australia for the Paragliding World Championships. About a week beforehand, she and a couple hundred others set off on a training run.

But there were signs that this was not going to be an ordinary practice session. Though organizers warned of stormy weather conditions that day, Ewa and her team figured they could handle it. Hadn’t she already seen it all?

When This Famous Paraglider Was Sucked Into A Huge Storm, She Needed A Miracle

Ewa departed about an hour after most of her competitors, and the first leg of her journey was business as usual. She met only calm conditions while zipping over the mountains.

Meanwhile, Ewa’s team monitored her progress from a decked-out van below. They could follow every detail of the glider’s trajectory in real time and would pick her up whenever she landed.

When This Famous Paraglider Was Sucked Into A Huge Storm, She Needed A Miracle

12 miles in, the smooth sailing stopped. The sky darkened and thunderstorms erupted all around Ewa. She’d seen rough weather before, but never anything like this. This storm was a killer.

Within minutes of its arrival, the storm was proving deadly. It already took one life. He Zhongpin, a Chinese paraglider, perished in mid-air after a lightning bolt struck him.

Chunks of hail, some larger than five inches in diameter, also rained down from the sky. One solid hit could shatter bones or tear through the thin cloth of the glider.

Sensing these dangers, Ewa steered away from the storm. She breathed a sigh of relief when she surpassed the range of the lightning and hail, but little did she know she had flown into the most formidable hazard of all.

Her glider entered a cumulonimbus cloud and got caught in a draft. It hurtled her upward at a speed of over 40 miles per hour. She reached a height of well over 30,000 feet, an altitude equivalent to that of a jumbo jet. It was higher than Mount Everest!

That was when Ewa blacked out. Not only was she higher up than any paraglider had ever gone before; she was also completely helpless.

Her ground team lost track of her amid the storm and could only watch in horror as her altitude numbers kept going up and up. They feared the worst, but kept their hopes alive for a miracle.

Icicles formed on Ewa’s gear and body as her lungs struggled to find oxygen. But as it turned out, her unconsciousness was something of a saving grace.

When This Famous Paraglider Was Sucked Into A Huge Storm, She Needed A Miracle

Ewa entered what was essentially a hibernation state, not unlike a cold-blooded animal. She couldn’t do anything for the moment, but at least she was keeping herself alive.

More and more ice covered her glider, and the weight caused it to plummet. Ewa awoke in free fall. She couldn’t even control the brakes because her gloves were both frozen solid.

As the Earth’s surface reappeared below, Ewa grabbed the handles and steered toward the ground. It was a strong effort, but not a perfect one — she crash-landed in an open field. Battered and exhausted, Ewa grabbed her radio.

Ewa’s team had no success reaching her during her ascent, so they could hardly believe it when she finally made contact. With time running out, they received Ewa’s coordinates — almost 40 miles from the original launch site.

When Ewa’s support finally reached her, she was freezing and too tired to move. But she was still alive. They whisked her away to a nearby hospital, where the staff got her the warmth and oxygen she so badly needed.

Ewa’s injuries were severe, but she made an astonishingly quick recovery. As a matter of fact, she made her return to the skies just six days later. She was on cloud nine — fortunately, this cloud didn’t lift her up past Mount Everest.

For true champions like Ewa, not even disaster can keep them down for long. Even in the face of unimaginable adversity, you have to power through and keep chasing your dreams.

Ewa’s survival almost defies explanation. How many other people could have made it through such a nightmare?

When a grandmother was charged with criminal trespassing and obstructing an officer, eyebrows around the community were raised. Family members and neighbors came to the woman’s defense and expressed how they felt the incident was “unnecessarily escalated.”

On the other side, the police department tried to justify their actions by saying that the officer “used a Taser instead of using deadly force.” But the question remains of why anyone would feel threatened by an older woman cutting flowers in the first place. Here’s what happened.

When Martha Al-Bishara went on a walk on a Friday near her home in northern Georgia, she left with the intent to pick dandelions. It was common for her to collect the plants for cooking purposes and making meals for her family was something she enjoyed. But the day would go differently than others even though Al-Bishara picked dandelions in the same area she always did.

The 87-year-old woman ventured outside with a kitchen knife to cut the flowers and a plastic bag in the other hand to collect them. She was doing what she always did when she crossed the street from her home in Chatsworth, Georgia, and arrived at a partially fenced lot belonging to a branch of the Boys and Girls Club.

According to The Washington Post, she began gathering the plants that she wanted when someone on the property noticed her in her blue dress and brown scarf around her head. The man named Tanner felt threatened for some reason by the woman — so threatened in fact, that he called the police.

911 Call

The 911 call came in on Friday at about 4:28 p.m., when Tanner, an employee of the club, told the operator, “This lady is walking on the bike trail, she has a knife and she won’t leave. She doesn’t speak English.” Tanner gave the operator the address of 502 Chestnut Street and he informed the operator that the woman was outside and that there were no children outside. All he kept saying was, “She told me she doesn’t speak English and keeps walking up the trail with a knife.”

Tanner continued, saying, “She’s old so she can’t get around too well, but, looks like she’s walking around looking for something, like, vegetation to cut down or something. There’s a bag too.” When they asked Tanner if she came at someone with a knife, he replied saying: “No, she just brought the knife onto the property in her hand. She didn’t try to attack anybody or anything.”

Describing the Woman

He proceeded to describe what the woman was wearing and asked the operator if they could send someone to the property. Soon after 4:30 p.m., two officers and the chief of the Chatsworth Police Department arrived at the scene, where a Boys and Girls Club staff member escorted them to the back of the property. There, the officers spotted Al-Bishara standing on a hill holding “a white plastic bag in her left hand and a steak knife in her right hand.”

Verbal Requests to Drop the Knife

The officers did not immediately realize that the woman didn’t speak English, but, according to the police, Al-Bishara did not respond to multiple verbal requests to put down her kitchen knife. Instead, according to The Washington Post, she continued walking and collecting dandelions. “While we were approaching the female she bent down to the ground and cut a weed and stood back up holding the weed in her left hand with the plastic bag,” the police report said.

“We kept telling her to drop the knife,” the report continued. “The female would look at us. Her demeanor was calm even seeing us with our guns out.” The Chatsworth police chief at one point even threw his own pocket knife on the ground “in an attempt to show the female that we wanted her to drop the knife,” according to the report.

But, when Al-Bishara didn’t respond and began walking down the hill toward the officers, one of them pointed his taser at her. He did this even though she expressed a very calm demeanor and facial expression. When she was about five yards away, the officer shot his taser, striking Al-Bishara in the chest and sending her to the ground.

Dalton Daily Citizen News, which reviewed body camera footage from the incident, said that Al-Bishara was heard crying as the taser prongs hit her and she began “lightly sobbing and speaking in Arabic.” At this point, officers were handcuffing her and they brought her to her feet. Al-Bishara was then taken to the police station, where a mug shot was obtained and she was charged with obstruction of an officer and criminal trespassing.

She was taken to the Murray County Detention Center where Chatsworth Police Chief, Josh Etheridge, defended his officers’ use of force. “In my opinion, it was the lowest use of force we could have used to simply stop that threat at the time,” Etheridge told the Daily Citizen-News. “And I know everyone is going to say, ‘An 87-year-old woman? How big a threat can she be?’ She still had a knife. An 87-year-old woman with a knife still has the ability to hurt an officer.”

But, Al-Bishara’s family members disagreed completely. They believe the police, who responded by tasering Al-Bishara, were completely out of line and unnecessarily escalated the situation. Al-Bishara’s daughter-in-law arrived at the scene after the arrest and told officers that their mother-in-law has dementia and only speaks Arabic.

“She’s picked dandelions from there before, and she had a bag of dandelions and a kitchen knife,” one of Al-Bishara’s granddaughters, Martha Douhne, told Channel 9 News. “I think it just fully escalated.” Douhne said that the family was deferring questions about the case to their attorney but confirmed facts about Al-Bishara’s family and history to The Washington Post.

Douhne said that Al-Bishara immigrated to the United States from Syria more than two decades ago and she is a naturalized citizen. She lives with her husband and other extended family members in Chatsworth, a city near the Tennessee border about 85 miles north of Atlanta. Douhne was also quick to dispute that the relative who told the officer that her grandmother that had dementia was wrong.

Getting the Charges Dropped

“That was something that was accidentally said in the heat of the moment,” Douhne said. “Grandma has no previous mental issues and has been and still is fully capable of living on her own with her husband.” Jeff Dean, an attorney for Al-Bishara’s family, is working on getting the charges against the elderly woman dropped. He said “we are evaluating what we’ll do as far as an unreasonable use of force case” against the police department.

Dean said, “The folks from the Boys and Girls Club, when they made their phone call to 911, clearly stated she was not a threat to anybody and told them she was gathering vegetation. Clearly, there was no threat.” Douhne told The Washington Post that her grandmother spent about two and a half hours in jail, then another two and half hours in the hospital to get her health checked.

Al-Bishara was okay physically but her head hurt trying to understand what had happened. “She is still repeating the incident over in her mind and telling us she didn’t mean for this to happen and apologizing that she didn’t want to bring this on us,” Douhne told the Daily Citizen-News. “She is having trouble sleeping and is stressed.”

A Neighbor Shares Her Thoughts

A neighbor said that Al-Bishara has lived in the area for 22 years and that she was shocked to learn what happened. “This woman don’t bother nobody or nothing,” said Elizabeth Usrey. “They keep their stuff clean and don’t bother anyone. I don’t really know what happened, but the woman wouldn’t hurt a fly. Using a Taser on someone that age is ridiculous.”

The Police Chief Speaks Out

Usrey explained that Al-Bishara and her husband enjoy walking around the neighborhood and when they harvest vegetables in their garden on their property, they share them with neighbors. “[The police] should have been more patient,” Usrey said. Police Chief, Josh Etheridge commented on the matter telling the Daily Citizen News that there will be a full investigation.

A Full Investigation?

“We handle the use of force issues internally, and an outside agency would be contacted if we thought a crime had been committed. If someone wanted to contact the GBI [Georgia Bureau of Investigation] — and we have been in contact with them to let them know what happened — because they think there was criminal wrongdoing, then we would welcome that. We haven’t requested them to come in. We simply don’t believe there was any criminal activity.”
