Meghan Markle’s Tattoo May Have Been A Tribute To Kate Middleton

Most parents celebrate their pregnancy with a low-key celebration, but Meghan Markle and Prince Harry are not your ordinary parents. It makes sense that a royal celebration would be a little different, and in this case, that meant getting a henna tattoo in Morocco! This (safe and non-permanent) tattoo wasn’t just a nod to her son. It was also likely a nod to Prince Harry’s sister-in-law, Kate Middleton, based on a subtle connection made by royal insiders.

As Meghan Markle departed Morocco in 2019, reporters noticed one detail that might have defined her relationship with sister-in-law Kate Middleton. They’ve developed a close kinship, though some of the similarities between the two have raised eyebrows.

Both ladies are well known for their style and are often referred to as “style icons.” They both represent what’s been dubbed “the Kate effect,” which in essence means that everything they wear sells out almost immediately.

Getty Images-Chris Jackson

Their styles are so similar that there has been speculation about whether or not Meghan has been copying Kate. Opinions on this differ, but there is no denying that over time, Meghans’s wardrobe has taken on a more “British” style. And her tattoo could be the final step of that transformation.

And it’s not just their clothes that mirror each other. Oftentimes, their body languages does too! Whether that’s a coincidence or the product of some royal training remains a mystery. But the similarities in their gestures can’t be denied.

Both ladies come from very different backgrounds and cultures. This has been the center of discussion for years now. Meghan and Kate have always been compared to each other, and it’s possible that Meghan has, unwillingly, adopted a royal “attitude.”

Most notably, both approached motherhood in a similar manner. Meghan, who followed a couple years behind Kate, seemingly took notes on how the Duchess poised herself. One tiny decoration caught Meghan’s eye — despite the fact that their origins couldn’t have been more different.

Meghan Markle famously starred on the hit TV show Suits. But she’s had an incredibly interesting career besides that. In fact, she was involved in show biz from a very early age. Her dad was an Emmy-winning lighting director who would often bring her on set.

Interestingly enough, she was going to an all-girls Catholic school, while regularly visiting the set of Married…with Children — a show whose content could be considered questionable for an eleven year old girl. Nonetheless, her time on set is what inspired her to pursue her acting career.

Meghan booked quite a few small roles as time went on. One of which was a briefcase girl on Deal or No Deal. A role she often mentions having hated, blaming the painful heels and uncomfortably tight dress.

Even though Meghan knew she wanted to pursue an acting career, she also refused to be a stereotype. So instead of becoming known as just another “California girl turned actress,” she opted for a double major from Northwestern University — a theatre and international relations major to be exact.

During her time in college, Meghan was a self proclaimed theatre nerd, spending countless hours in rehearsals while juggling her other classes. She was also juggling her sorority time. She was a member of Kappa Kappa Gamma and reportedly loved it.

It took some time, but Meghan eventually landed her big break on what became the popular tv drama, Suits. The show enjoyed a very successful run — 7 seasons full of awards and critical praise. That made Meghan one of Hollywood’s most coveted stars.

Meanwhile, on the other side of the pond, Kate Middleton enjoyed a different upbringing with no show biz aspirations. Kate was born in Reading, to a pilot and a stewardess. She is the oldest of three siblings, whom she remains close with.

While Meghan studied theatre in college, Kate studied art history at the University of St. Andrews. It was there that she met her current husband, Prince William. They lived in the same dorm and took some of the same classes during their time there.

Kate’s not only well versed in the art history world. She has also developed quite an eye – photography wise. Her work is so good in fact, that she spent some time discussing possible exhibits with well known art galleries in London. Her photography muses are now, mostly, her kids.

While both women have very different backgrounds, they both care deeply about educational programs both in England and abroad. Having participated and developed in programs that specifically target girls and at risk youth, these ladies have been taking an active role in shaping the future of education.

Philanthropic pursuits bond entire the family and are part of the reason they’re all such a motivated bunch. Meghan always values the well-being and opinions of others, and her respect for Kate likely inspired one pit stop in Morocco.

Getty Images-Chris Jackson

Every move Meghan made caused a commotion, and her trip to Morocco was no exception. It was an exciting trip — with an important visit to an all girls boarding house on top of the Atlas mountains.

Getty Images-Hannah McKay

It was during this trip that Meghan got a small henna tattoo on her left arm. The temporary tattoo was a beautiful brown flower, that often represents good luck and good health — both incredibly important for all expecting mothers.

Getty Images-Tim Rooke

Experts pointed out that Kate received a similar henna design leading up to her pregnancy! Whether or not the tattoo is a direct tribute, we may never know. But these two incredible women share an incredible bond that’s more than skin-deep. That was why one decision made by Meghan and Harry was particularly surprising.

We’ve all heard some of the crazy rumors Meghan Markle has endured over the last few years. There has been gossip about Meghan’s parentage, her race, her values, her religion, her childhood — the list goes on, each item more ridiculous than the next…

Chris Jackson/Getty Images

Or are they? Though it’s obvious some of these rumors are false, some are a little harder to deny. We can’t know what goes on behind closed doors, making one of the most startling stories about Meghan in Quinn’s book all the more surprising.

Rumors about tension in the “Fab Four” (AKA, Will, Kate, Harry, and Meghan) have followed them since the beginning, and everyone from anonymous palace staffers to body language experts have put in their two cents about how true those claims are.

Chris Jackson/Getty Images

Royal expert Anna Pasternak said that she thinks Prince William finds Meghan to be “difficult,” a claim that royal biographer Andrew Morton supported when he said that Prince Harry “went mental” on his brother for trying to “finish his romance before it had begun.”

Samir Hussein/WireImage

The reported “rift” between Harry and William over Meghan is only the tip of the iceberg. Rumors have circulated about Meghan being bad at pretty much everything, from being a bad wife to a bad mother to a bad royal.

Max Mumby/Indigo/Getty Images

Some of these anonymous sources have been kinder to Meghan than others, especially about her introduction to royal life. “Meghan was fast-tracked into the royal firm,” said body language expert Judi James to Express. “This suggested some trust in Meghan’s confidence as a new royal.”

Jeff J Mitchell/Getty Images

But for every “nice” rumor, there were ten mean-spirited ones behind it. “Meghan’s pregnancy was faked!” “Meghan’s related to Jack the Ripper!” These rumors are clearly just ways of adding to the Meghan hate. But what if one of the craziest rumors is true?

Life & Style

You see, despite all these nonsense rumors, the ones that always seem the most realistic are those about Meghan’s rocky relationship with the royal family. And ever since she married the youngest of England’s most beloved royal brothers, the comparisons began.

Rosa Woods – Pool/Getty Images

It’s almost natural people started to compare Kate Middleton and Meghan Markle to each other. On the outside, they just seem so different: One is a classic English rose, and the other a divorced, American, mixed-race Hollywood actress. Meghan’s not exactly traditional…

Suits/USA Network

“Kate is actually one of the nicest royals, and she hasn’t let life in her extremely grand apartment at Kensington go to her head,” said a palace insider in Quinn’s book. They even opened up about Kate and Meghan’s first meeting.

Karwai Tang/Getty Images

“She was very warm towards Meghan when she arrived,” the same insider claimed. But contrary to photos of the sisters-in-law smiling together, rumors have circulated that Meghan is actually jealous of Kate’s future as Queen’s Consort, AKA the wife of the King of England.

Chris Jackson – WPA Pool/Getty Images

“I think [Meghan] has found that difficult to deal with,” according to the same palace insider. Apparently, Meghan’s “jealousy” even extended to the size of William and Kate’s apartment in comparison to Harry and Meghan’s cottage.

Chris Jackson/Getty Images

“Although Harry loved their cottage in the grounds, Meghan was conscious that it was tiny in comparison to the vast apartment complex where Kate and William live,” the insider said. A second palace source had an even more shocking story to tell.

Samir Hussein/Samir Hussein/WireImage

According to this second source in Quinn’s book, the reason Harry and Meghan left royal life behind had less to do with the intrusive press swarming around them and more to do with Kate Middleton. Apparently, Kate witnessed Meghan doing something unforgivable.

Max Mumby/Indigo/Getty Images

“Kate was horrified when Meghan shouted at a member of Kate’s staff,” the second source claimed. “That was definitely the beginning of discussions about leaving Kensington palace.” This source touched on some of the internal conflicts Meghan must be dealing with.

Chris Jackson/Getty Images

“Like many people not used to dealing with servants, Meghan overdoes the imperiousness; so on the one hand she wants to be like Diana, a people’s princess, and on the other she wants people to stand to attention when she clicks her fingers,” the source said.

Ian Vogler

According to a third palace source, the pressure of being a royal “makes [Meghan] overreact sometimes — she doesn’t have Kate’s assured way of dealing with people.” Comparisons aside, it’s possible that Meghan’s behavior might go deeper than sister-in-law squabbles.

Many think that Meghan’s reportedly “bad” behavior has more to do with how the entire royal family has treated her than anything else. “There are the more reactionary elements in the Royal Family who do look down on her, and she knows it,” said the third source.

John Stillwell – WPA Pool/Getty Images

Tabloids have loved to speculate about Queen Elizabeth feelings toward Meghan and Harry’s departure from royal life, with some claiming that the Queen was “devastated” and thrown off guard by the announcement. Still, at least we know one thing for sure.

Regardless of what any anonymous source says, no one can ever really know what goes on behind those ornate palace gates. Now that Harry and Meghan have officially distanced themselves from their royal duties, the world wants to know what their next move will be…

As made official on March 31st, 2020, the Duke and Duchess of Sussex were no longer considered working members of the royal family. While they are still welcome around Granny Liz’s palace anytime they please, their role shifts did have tangible consequences.

Specifically, Prince Harry and Meghan Markle will have to decide on what to do about their names. Don’t worry, Harry is still considered a prince, not that the world would ever be able to un-flip that switch of perception regarding the red-headed royal.

Getty Images / Pool / Pool

The ambiguity surrounds which last names Harry and Meghan will end up choosing. As it stands, they could very well pick different surnames. For now, they are technically Harry and Meghan, the Duke and Duchess of Sussex.

The Australian

It’s totally their choice if they want to follow in the footsteps of Prince William and Duchess Kate, who use Cambridge as their last names for their kid’s school and on social media, which would make them the Sussexes.

Governor General of the Commonwealth of Australia

There’s also the possibility that Archie wouldn’t share the same last name as his parents. Since he falls into the category of royalty without an official title, he would automatically be considered a Mountbatten-Windsor.

BBC

It became an official rule in 1973 that non-title holding royals would take the last name Mountbatten-Windsor. However, coming to that conclusion wasn’t easy. It was a hotly debated topic among the family for years that played out in public.

Getty Images / Fox Photos / Stringer

The last name debacle originated from another young couple trying to coming to terms with how the intricacies of royalty impact a marriage — Queen Elizabeth and Prince Philip. Ultimately, Philip refused to back down.

Public Domain

Back when Philip first started flirting with a royal marriage alliance with then-Princess Elizabeth, he had the most exhaustingly long title in existence: Prince Philip of Greece and Denmark of the House of Schleswig-Holstein-Sonderburg-Glücksburg.

Flickr / Archives New Zealand

In efforts to have a more politically neutral title, Philip opted to take on the surname of his grandparents — Mountbatten. He was under the impression that his children would take his last name, but the optics of royalty complicated everything.

Getty Images / Hulton Deutsch / Contributor

It turned out that it wasn’t Philip’s call to make. Prime Minister Winston Churchill was not on board. He weighed in on the issue, suggesting the children bear the name Windsor as per the previous tradition.

Public Domain

Other members of the royal family got involved, including Queen Elizabeth’s grandmother Queen Mary. She sided with Churchill on this one, which only further inflamed the debate, all the way to the floor of Parliament.

Getty Images / Topical Press Agency / Stringer

In the end, the Queen was forced to make a tough call. She sided with Churchill and her family so their children were considered Windsors, though Prince Philip was livid. He understandably felt it his right to have some control over his own children’s names.

Getty Images / Tim Graham / Contributor

When Queen Elizabeth was heavily pregnant with her third child, Prince Andrew, Philip must have finally been able to convince her. She announced she officially changed her name to Mountbatten-Windsor, and the rest is history. But back to Harry and Meghan.

So it’s well within the realm of possibility that Meghan and Harry could choose to become Mountbatten-Windsors as is the tradition in royal families to take a name consistent with one’s children. Though, Harry himself once deviated from that pattern.

During his army training, Prince Harry used Wales as his last name. His fellow soldiers and commanding officers knew him as Officer Cadet Wales, which he chose to honor his father Charles, Prince of Wales.

Then there’s Meghan Markle, whose name packs a perfect alliterative punch. It even rhymes with sparkle, which you have to admit is ideal for someone famous. Now that she’s no longer on the payroll of the crown, she could certainly stick with her birth name.

Before entering the royal scene, Meghan Markle earned her own notoriety as an actress on the USA television show Suits. Then, after their official royal exit, Meghan announced her return to show business by way of narrating the Disney Plus documentary Elephant.

For this project, Meghan agreed to sign on in exchange for a donation to the organization Elephants Without Borders, however, she and Harry are now fully cleared to earn their own money. So if she sticks with acting, it might be advantageous to keep Markle.

African Elephant Journal

Prince Harry’s likely last name options are Wales, Sussex, or Mountbatten-Windsor, though there have been a few wistful suggestions of Harry Markle. It wouldn’t be outside of the realm of possibility for Harry to make a somewhat progressive move by taking his wife’s name.

After all, Harry isn’t afraid to make headlines. He and his royal family members are no strangers to creating a scandal for far more controversial actions than honoring their wives with a hyphenated last name.

24. Illegally-recorded phone calls aside, it’s photography that has gotten the royal family into the most trouble over the past century. Even way back before Queen Elizabeth II was the ruler of the Commonwealth, photographs shed light on the surprising way the royals lived.

25.1951: Future Queen Elizabeth II and her husband Prince Philip recently welcomed their two children, Charles and Anne. The new family stands here with King George VI, the Queen Mother Elizabeth, and Elizabeth’s younger sister Margaret.

27. 1960: A third royal child, Prince Andrew, arrived. The newborn enjoys a picnic with his parents and siblings during a holiday in Balmoral, Scotland. That’s right — that castle in the background was only their vacation home.

28. 1965: This Christmas photo depicts the Royal Family shortly after the birth of Elizabeth and Philip’s fourth and final child, Prince Edward. Their household grew livelier than ever, and the new generation of royals quickly endeared themselves to the British public.

29. 1971: Coming up on twenty years as monarch, Elizabeth greets onlookers with Edward, Andrew, and her niece Lady Sarah. They are headed to meet the rest of their extended family for a winter holiday at Sandringham House.

30. 1976: By this point, Elizabeth’s children are old enough to rebel a bit. Prince Andrew laughs at his mother from the second row as she nervously rides at the front of a cable car. Edward, seated next to her, looks a little bit more respectful.

31. 1977: This year marks Elizabeth’s Silver Jubilee of 25 years on the British throne. She celebrated by visiting 36 different countries in the span of a few months, followed by a massive procession through London.

32. 1980: For Prince Charles, most of the 1970s were his “bachelor years.” He seemed more content to party and jump between girlfriends than seriously pursue marriage. Here, he sips a coconut drink in Bhubaneswar, India, but he wouldn’t stay a bachelor for long.

33. 1981: Incredible hype built up once Prince Charles announced that he would marry Lady Diana Spencer. The press dubbed the event “The Wedding of the Century,” and the public followed every aspect of the ceremony with fervor.

34. 1982: Diana and Charles had their first son, William. The new parents play with William in Kensington Palace, though they didn’t refer to him as William behind closed doors. Interestingly, their family nickname for the young prince was “Wombat.”

35. 1988: Four years earlier, Diana gave birth to her second son, Prince Harry. Far from shy of the many cameras around him, Harry sticks his tongue out from the Buckingham Palace balcony while Diana tells him to stop.

36. 1992: Below, Philip, Charles, Elizabeth, and the Queen Mother depart from Princess Anne’s wedding. However, 1992 was not an easy year for the family. In addition to a fire in Windsor castle, marital troubles sprung up for Elizabeth’s children.

37. 1995: Hurt by extramarital affairs and a 13-year age gap, Charles and Diana were separated throughout the early 1990s. However, they still attended official events together. They divorced a year later, though the greatest tragedy was yet to come.

38. 1997: The entire world went into shock with the news that Princess Diana died in a violent Paris car crash. Thousands of guests attended her funeral at Westminster Abbey, while millions more watched on television. Her sons were only 15 and 12 at the time.

39. 2002: More loss followed the royal family into the new millennium, though this instance was admittedly less shocking. The Queen Mother passed away at age 101. On a happier note, Queen Elizabeth reached her Golden Jubilee on this same year.

40. 2005: Prince Charles carried on an affair with Camilla Parker Bowles while still married to Diana, so Charles and Camila met controversy when they announced their engagement. As a result, they chose to marry in a civil ceremony instead of a royal wedding.

41. 2006: Now all grown up, Prince Harry decided to follow William into the military. As a Cornet in the famed Blues and Royals regiment, he stands at attention with his saber as Queen Elizabeth walks by. Still, he cannot help but crack a smile at his grandmother.

42. 2011: The Brits — and just about everyone else — went crazy for the next generation of royal weddings. Prince William married Kate Middleton, a classmate from the University of St. Andrews, and over 160 million people watched the lavish ceremony.

43. 2017: The Royal family celebrates the 91st birthday of Queen Elizabeth, who also became the longest-reigning British monarch a couple years prior. William and Kate’s young children, George and Charlotte, watch the fanfare with excitement.

44. 2018: Harry matched his brother’s fairytale wedding with one of his own. He married American actress Meghan Markle, best known from the TV show Suits. Meghan’s entry into the royal family is also notable because she is a woman of color.

45. Somehow, with all eyes on them, the Royal Family has managed to carve out somewhat normal lives for themselves. Ever annoy a sibling just because you feel like it? Prince Harry is teasing his older brother with a rather large boa constrictor. It’s all in good fun…we hope.
