Disney’s “Frozen” was an insanely popular movie. Between the gripping story and all of those catchy musical numbers, it’s a hard movie not to become quietly addicted to, for even the biggest curmudgeon.
Now with the sequel well underway, many people are hoping that Disney will make one pretty major change to the story. It’s about Elsa’s love life, and people on Twitter won’t rest until they see a change…
People can’t wait for the highly anticipated Disney movie, “Frozen 2”, set to be released in 2019. The adventures of Elsa the ice queen captivated folks all around the globe. Now Elsa’s turning heads for another reason…
Elsa’s song “Let It Go” has been viewed as an anthem for the LGBTQ community, which has led many people to ask that in the movie’s sequel Elsa be given a female love interest. They’re using the hashtag #GiveElsaAGirlfriend to do it, too!

People aren’t just doing this on a whim, either. For many people, the idea of a major Disney princess being represented as a member of the LGBTQ community could transform the way gay and lesbian children growing up see themselves in media portrayals.
#GiveElsaAGirlfriend because representation matters. Cuz u can teach children acceptance, how to love, to not bully others because of their differences, how to have an open mind and not judge others, and to accept and be comfortable with their own sexual and gender orientation.

The hashtag got so big that the movie’s own writer-director, Jennifer Lee, finally spoke out about Elsa’s love life. “I love everything people are saying [and] people are thinking about with our film―that it’s creating dialogue, that Elsa is this wonderful character that speaks to so many people,” she told Huffington Post. “It means the world to us that we’re part of these conversations.”
Not exactly a ringing endorsement, but it makes sense that she’d be so careful. After all, for all of the excited and happy folks out there who are in favor of Elsa’s queerness, there are even more people who think it absolutely should not happen.

For some people, it wasn’t an issue of Elsa being a lesbian, it was an issue of Elsa having a love interest at all! For some, the focus on the character’s love life seems to take away from the power of the original story.
I am gay and 100% not a homophobe but not too keen on Elsa specifically having a female love interest. I am all for more diverse characters and would love to see this happen but Elsa’s story is about being a strong, independant woman. She don’t need no man or woman!

Elsa wouldn’t be the first openly gay character in a Disney property, either. Actor Joshua Rusk has been playing Disney’s first gay teen on their new show Andi Mack.
The times they are a-changin’, and it’s great to see that Disney isn’t scared to talk about changing too. Talk about some pretty impressive steps forward, right?
